Application Process:

Applicants to the program must be either enrolled at, or accepted to attend, the Schenectady County Community College Fire Protection Technology program, the Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program or other similar full time college fire or EMS related programs. Applicants must also become members of the Boght Community Fire Company or presently be an active member of another fire department.

Contact the membership committee for the deadlines of when applications must be received for the fall and spring semesters.

The dormitory application has four components:

  1. Application for Admission to the Boght Community Fire District Bunk-in Program.
  2. Personal statement detailing why you want to become part of the program
  3. A resume detailing your educational and work experience.
  4. Verification of acceptance or application for enrollment in a full time fire or EMS related college curriculum.

Remember: Applications are not complete until all four items are received.

Selection Process: Program selection normally occurs twice each year prior to each semester. The application and selection process is conducted by the Fire District Program Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC generally consists of one (1) Commissioner, one (1) Chief, one Line Officer one (1) Civil Officer and one (1) active member. The PAC reviews the completed applications and then conducts interviews as needed. While there are normally several new spots available each semester, the number fluctuates based upon the number of returning and graduating students. When the number of qualified applicants exceeds the space available, a wait list is created.

Admission Criteria: The only mandatory requirements are enrollment in a fire or EMS related college curriculum and membership in the Boght Community Fire Company or other fire department. Each applicant is judged on their own merits. No previous fire or EMS experience is required. The PAC takes numerous factors into consideration when making their decision. Preference may be given to applicants who are already certified as a Firefighter I or EMT-Basic. Those applicants not initially accepted into the program will be considered in future semesters if requested. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact a member of the membership committee to arrange a visit to the fire department and review of the requirements of the program.
